MGC GT Rebuild

Andy Schultz rebuilds a forlorn MGC GT

1

Andy Shultz, the proprietor of Cuerden Classics has recently embarked on a new rebuild. Other projects Andy has completed include a full bodyshell and rebuild of a long wheelbase Range Rover, restoration of a number of MG B's and midgets, and a fine example of a MGB roadster converted to a stunning V8 beast.

Picture 1 shows the N/S floor before removal of the sill section, as you can see the castle section is rotten.

The pictures on this page show various parts of his new endeavour, a nuts and bolts restoration of an MGC GT! Has he bitten off more than he can chew? The photos show extensive rust. Folow his progress as jobs are completed.

Andy started by raising the car off the ground, onto stands so that the car can be stripped. Doors, front wings, front and rear suspension members and axles, rear hatch, and all interior fittings were stripped off first. Then the engine and all ancilliaries together with the wiring loom were removed.

Picture 2 shows the complete sill sections inluding the inner step have been removed. The rear chassis, lower edge is missing this needs fabricating before the inner step can be offered up.

At this point work could start on the bodyshell, and all the rusty panels could be cut out. The sill sections on both sides were rotten and will need to be replaced as will the nearside inner wing trumpet section. The bottom of the rear wings are to be cut out for replacement. Most of the floor sections are sound with only the triangular floor extensions needing replacement.

Further investigation shows the extent of the corrosion on this monster, all being stripped off before reconstruction. We all wonder if there will be anything left of the original car when Andy's work is complete. " All will be fine ", was the quote when Andy was asked about the job at a recent meeting, but there is a lot of rust !!!

Picture 3 shows the nearside sills removed and the extent of the rusted panels on the rear wing.

Picture 4 shows the state of the floor and nearside jacking point when the underseal was stripped, not too bad !
